OSR Christmas, 2015

Greetings and Happy Holidays! Once again, +Erik Tenkar is graciously coordinating the annual 12 days of OSR Christmas, in which various generous people give away RPG-related items. I'm giving away 3 signed hardcover copies of my novel, Heraclix and Pomp. How is this related to tabletop role-playing? Well, the impetus for the novel came out of a conversation I had in a hallway with members of my gaming group as we were talking about "next steps". I mentioned my desire to write an adventure for two characters and we discussed various options for a pair of heroes that could viably make it through a dungeon crawl on their own. This conversation stuck in my mind, and I finally settled on the idea of a flesh golem and a pixie as an adventuring party. They'd have all the muscle, magic, and sneaking skills any low-level party would need. So I set about writing a short story, which eventually morphed into the novel, Heraclix and Pomp.

To enter, please enter your favorite heroic duo and why they are your favorite in the comments section below before 12 AM, 12/23 (that's 6 AM GMT 12/23). I will randomly choose the winners using a d20. First three to crit win! And thanks for entering!

Entries are open to residents of US and Canada.

PS: Still need convincing? Read these reviews!

  1. It's a tough question, but I have always enjoyed the back and forth between Frodo and Sam as they encourage each other on the endless walk.

  2. Valentine and Earl from Tremors. A lot of their partnership is based on goofy comedy, which is probably why they are so interesting to me. But when they face down the alien worm things, they have each others' backs. So, they're basically like a duo or party in a role-playing game.

  3. I suppose I should say Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, but I haven't read Fritz Lieber yet. (I will, I will, just not yet.)

So I will say Don Quixote and Sancho.

  7. I'm not sure how heroic they are, but I could listen to Henry Gordon Jago & Professor George Litefoot banter all day long (especially when their conversations are scripted by Robert Holmes).

  9. My favorite heroic duo are Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. Not that there aren't plenty of other great characters, but these were my first and they seem to have imprinted on me. And it's not even so much for what they do, but because of what they say while they're doing it. Everything else gets compared to them.

  10. Mappo and Icarium from Deadhouse Gates, book 2 of Malazan Book of the Fallen. Literally the only book to make me cry.

  12. The boy and the dog from the classic cult scifi movie A Boy and His Dog. All you need to survive the apocalypse is a 4 legged telepathic best friend.

  16. I really enjoyed reading about Skeeve and Aahz from the Another Fine Myth series when I was younger. I related to the awkwardness and insecurities of Skeeve, and Aahz was a cool, worldly mentor figure that looked like he would be fun to hang out with.

  19. Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, because they seemed to hit the sweet spot of covering both sides of the spectrum for fantasy heroes, but still creating a whole that was greater than the sum...

  20. Gotrek and Felix from various Warhammer fantasy novels.

  22. Doctor Who and any of his companions. Though I have only really become a Doctor Who fan with the new Doctor stories, with Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith, I have been watching some of the older shows when I can get them. But the new shows have had some fantastic stories and great chemistry with the Doctors and their companions.

  23. Holmes and Watson, an awesome heroic duo, one has the cold calculating brain the other the heart.
